Q. visitor asked, I currently game on a 23" 1080p monitor with a 60 Hz refresh rate. I am wondering whether for a next monitor a higher native resolution or higher refresh rate would be more important to upgrade. I am kinda looking at 1440p monitors @ 60Hz vs. 1080p monitors @144Hz

good afternoon and welcome to Newegg! can I help you find a gaming monitor?
Hi Nathan, I do have a question about getting a new gaming monitor
Nathan R.
ok, happy to help you out!
I currently game on a 23" 1080p monitor with a 60 Hz refresh rate. I am wondering whether for a next monitor a higher native resolution or higher refresh rate would be more important to upgrade. I am kinda looking at 1440p monitors @ 60Hz vs. 1080p monitors @144Hz
I would love to do 1440p@144Hz but I think that is out of my budget at the moment
Nathan R.
1440p is gorgeous ( I'm currently running a 27" 1440p 60hz display ). What GPU are you using to drive the display?
I'm currently using a very outdated GTX260, but I am going to be building a new PC for this monitor, I will maybe be getting a GTX 900 series for ir
it*
Nathan R.
cool. the 970 is a great deal for the performance and OC headroom you can get out of it. Do you play competitively?
not frequently, I would like to get into it more though
Nathan R.
ok, if high level tournament play isn't really what you're going for, a higher refresh rate is less of a concern
refreshing at 144hz is mostly a consideration for pro level gaming. 1440p at 60hz is beautiful and perfect for most users
I hadn't thought about it that way but it's a very good point, I doubt I'd ever play anything where I'd consider the refresh rate a limitation
Nathan R.
yeah, it's something that really only affects you if you're doing it for money. :-)
it's certainly cool to see a game running at 120 + fps, but it isn't going to make a difference in most cases
I haven't had a chance to go look at some in person, but I'm not sure if I would even see a difference personally
but adding more pixels definitely always make a big difference :-)
Nathan R.
definitely. the difference between 1080p and 1440p is huge
are there any that you would recommend?
Nathan R.
the display I currently use is a 27" ASUS and it looks awesome
let me try and find the exact model
I definitely like ASUS, I was kinda looking at some by Samsung and Acer too
Nathan R.
With Samsung and ASUS, you've got a very close comparison because ASUS uses Samsung panels
that's good to know, my current monitor is a Samsung and I really like it
Nathan R.
This is the display I'm currently using:

that's one I was looking at
what about response time though? Is that similar to refresh rate in that lowering it more than 5ms is pretty much only a concern for professional gaming?
Nathan R.
Pretty much. Something like a 3-1ms response time is only going to matter if you're counting every fraction of a frame for input lag
for the average gamer playing single player games or DOTA pubs, it doesn't really make a huge difference
I'm really happy with my display and I'd recommend it in a heartbeat
plus, it's fully rotateable, which is nice for Arcade shoot 'em ups and other genres
yeah, I just noticed that, I will definitely consider this one
Nathan R.
right on. can I help you with anything else?
nope, that answers all of my questions. thanks a lot for your help!
Nathan R.
you're welcome! have a great day!
you too!
