Q. visitor asked, or if it is something I can connect to one pc that can easily access it via a usb cable and it have wifi capabilty for other pcs to access it would work also. like to have 4TB of storage but if I do the raid on the device for backup I was thinking I may need to go with a 2x4TB. I could go 3TB if I need too in order to get something that will work like I want it too

Richard L.
Hey there, what awesome gear are you planning on getting from Newegg today?
i want something that is a standalone server that I connect to with multiple pcs that can be accomplished easily through just browsing or mapping a network drive letter to without have to use a GUI interface or internet browser to save and open files
Richard L.
hmmm
so youre looking for a network storage device basically?
yes
Richard L.
ok
and how much storage are you looking into getting?
or if it is something I can connect to one pc that can easily access it via a usb cable and it have wifi capabilty for other pcs to access it would work also
Richard L.
a NAS device would be the best way for you to backup multiple units and have a dedicated network drive
like to have 4TB of storage but if I do the raid on the device for backup I was thinking I may need to go with a 2x4TB. I could go 3TB if I need too in order to get something that will work like I want it too
Richard L.
cool
so you already have 1 4tb drive?
is that just an internal drive or an external drive?
No i currently have a Buffulo 2x1TB drive that is only connected to one pc via USB cable but I cant allow others to access it without plugging it into that other pc
Richard L.
ok
and do you like the buffalo drive?
something like this is what i would recommend
its worked good for a long time but Im not against other brands
Richard L.
cool
check out that link i sent you and ill show you a few others i recommend as well ok?
and this one is a way better unit that the buffalo
the reviews dont look to good on the first one for some reason
Richard L.
its an older model
check out the second one
and this one is very impressive as well
looking now
Richard L.
cool
and heres the synology with 2 drives
on these if I plugged into one pc via usb would it also have to plug into the router in order for the others to access it in the building or could they access it without it being plugged into the router
Richard L.
these units would not be able to be connected to a pc directly
access and setup is directly over the internet
the setup is completed via the web browser
but once setup
it can be accessed like a network drive
and you can setup permissions
if i wanted to open a file to view it would have have to download it to open it or can I open and view directly from the NAS
Richard L.
once the permissions and settings are setup properly, you can open and view directly from the NAS without having to download the file
which one is the easiest to configure and has the best backup protection
Richard L.
they all have backup protection
you install 2 drives and set it up with redundancy
which is if one drive fails the other one has your files
i would go with the last kit i showed you
with the synology device and the 2 hard drives
As long as I can open them directly from the NAS to view them and work on them Im ok with that. But if I had to download a file everytime to view or work on it I wouldnt want it
Richard L.
nope
its going to be like a network drive
so you can access files without having to download them :-)
ok so all the computers that access it dont have to be setup in a network environment right for it to work correctly
Richard L.
nope
there are several ways that you can give other computers access to the files on the drive
does it require software to be installed on the computers that access it or once its online they all can see it without any software installed. Sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure
Richard L.
depending on how you setup the unit
and thats ok
i understand your process :-)
ive been researching a few myself for a few weeks now
im saving up to get one :-)
what are the ways to set it up
Richard L.
it would be detailed in the manual
but basically
to have anyone on the network be able to see and access the drive and edit files
just briefly
Richard L.
or to only have certain pc's or ppl be able to see and or access the device
as well as file editing can be authorized to only certain users
you can also gain access outside of your home/office once its setup properly
and all of these devices have excellent customer servce available for assistance in setting up your device
ok. See i just have that buffulo drive now and it is plugged directly into my pc and its served its purpose. But my wife does all the quickbooks, etc for the company so when she needs to work on that stuff I have to unplug it and take it to her then I lose access
Richard L.
yup
the NAS device will fix that :-)
If you had your choice of the NAS is the Synology the one you would buy...if not tell me which one you like the best
Richard L.
i have narrowed my search down to between the synology and the western digital
but my needs will be different from yours
as i will be using my system as a media server as well
so im also going to be streaming directly to my xbox as well
since ive told u what i need it for do u think that one is my best fit
Richard L.
the synology with the 2 drives is what i would recommend for you :-)
there are just so many. One company i talked to tried to push me to the qnap
Richard L.
you wont be using it for media sharing or none of that advanced stuff
just file storage and sharing
right all file sharing. is its access speed good
Richard L.
yup
as long as your router is fast enough to keep up with it :-)
ok so this kit comes with everything i need right
Richard L.
yup
the 2 drives and the NAS enclosure
ok cool..got a promo code lol
Richard L.
LOL
nah man
cool had to try
Richard L.
we dont work directly for newegg so they dont give us any of that stuff
oh got u
Richard L.
but that kit has a bundle discount ;-)
thanks man I guess Ill go with that one
Richard L.
yeah
you wont be dissapointed :-):-):-)
thanks again
