Q. visitor asked, I'm looking for a NAS

Richard L.
Hey there, what awesome gear are you planning on getting from Newegg today?
I'm looking for a NAS
Richard L.
cool
I have about 4tb of video I want on the server
Richard L.
you8 looking for how many bays?
or what max capacity?
4 tb is easy :-)
I'm going to say upgradable to about 12 TB some day
for now I just need to replace the 4tb mycloud that is basically crap
Richard L.
ok
so you dont wanna max it out right now?
AND, I'm looking for something fast
nah, not right now
Richard L.
well
this is what i would recommend
shoot
Richard L.
you get something with at least 4 bays
ok...
Richard L.
and get at least 3 3tb drives
that will give you 6 TB of storage on a raid 5 configuration
and you can add another 3 TB whenever you want
9tb
Richard L.
no
i thought you said 3 3tb?
Richard L.
in raid 5 you lose the capacity of one drive for redundancy
oooooh
do you reccomend any NAS specifically
synology?
Richard L.
synology
is a great pick
also
seagate and
ok
Richard L.
qnap
any of those 3 are good
if you could help me pick one specifically, that'd be even more awesome lol
Richard L.
sure
?
oh wait, 4 bays right?
Richard L.
that one is only a 2 bay unit
so upgrading in the future will be complicvated
wow, 4 bays are expensive
Richard L.
yeah
they have a ton of features
even the cheapest qnap is $266.
Richard L.
yeah
you know what they say....you get what you pay for :-)
haha
and that's without the HDs
dang
Richard L.
the 4 bays are the best for longevity and expandability
if you get a 2 bay
there isnt a lot of upgrading that can be done
aside form swapping the drives out
so you can configure them in raid in the NAS? Or is that something that is done automatically via the NAS
?
Richard L.
yeah
you can do the configuration via the nas interface
yea
alright, I'm looking at HDs now, I'll get that QNAP
Richard L.
that one is a great lower end unit that wont break the bank ;-)
did you see the configurator to get it with the drives?
what do you reccomend for the actual drives
Richard L.
use that site
I did, I clicked on it
Richard L.
:-)
so you could start with 2 4tb reds
then set those up in raid 1
but I'll lose one drive to raid5 right?
oooh
Richard L.
then when you have more cash
i gotcha, that'll work
Richard L.
buy 2 more
boom
Richard L.
pull the drives
one other quick tid bit
Richard L.
hold one that has all of your data
intellipower...
Richard L.
yeah?
is that 5400rpm?
Richard L.
the reds are specifically
made for nas drives
ok
Richard L.
the dont have to be 7200 rpm drives
especially if you raid 5 the drives
I just want to ensure they're fast
Richard L.
you get the best of both worlds
in raid 5
all of the drives act as one
ok, looking now
roger, in raid
Richard L.
yup
so even though
you start with 2 drives
eventually
when you upgrade
you will have a faster throughput becuase of the raid 5 configuration that you eventually wanna use ;-)
HGST Deskstar are slightly more expensive, any reason why?
they do look faster pound for pound
Richard L.
deskstars are that popular anymore
but it depends on the speed of the drive and the cache and a bunch of other stuff
another reason yopu dont wanna go with 7200 rpm drives in nas
is because nas units basically run all the time
aaaah
Richard L.
so higher wear and tear on the drives
so longevity is more important
Richard L.
definitely
especially when looking at backup solutions
ok, at this point i trust seagate way more than western digitial so I think I'll go with those
Richard L.
as opposed to these being your pormary data source
ok, got the Seagate NASs, 4tb, 64mb cache, SATA 6.0
2 of those
Richard L.
sweet
I'm running a netgear C3700, that should be adequate and not bottle neck my server right?
for my router/modem solution
Richard L.
is it a gigabit router?
lemme check, I'm sure it is
it's that one, so now im unsure
Richard L.
yeah
it is
GIGABIT WIRED—Ideal for HD gaming and video streaming
thats in the description
lol
missed that
thanks for all your help
Richard L.
youre welcome
is this your job? helping on newegg.
Richard L.
yeah
second job
kinda fun
:-)
gotcha
i can see that
Richard L.
i do it when im not busy at home ;-)
cool
I'm fairly tech savvy but don't know much about NASs, just been upgrading internal storage until now lol
Richard L.
yeah
ive been doing a lot of research myself
but i decided that ill be designing and building my own instead of buying one
i wanna design everything and the software as well :-)
tons of work but it will be fun :-)
your own NAS??
Richard L.
yup
nice
Richard L.
definitely
I saw a sick on on Linus tech tips that he built
Richard L.
yeah
i saw that one too
theres tons of resources out there
its just a lot of work :-)
haha, yeah it is, good luck with that
if only 2TB SSDs weren't rediculously priced
Richard L.
the prices are falling every day
not cheap enough yet lol
Richard L.
definitely not
i read that theres a 4 tb unit on the horizon
i would get that
dang
definitely
Richard L.
as i really want more than 2 tb in my laptop
when's that supposed to be released
Richard L.
and theres no 3 tb standard drives yet
right
should I just wait then? lol
Richard L.
well
its gonna be at least 600$ i think
lol
and theres no redundancy :-)
my cart is at $563 lol
I would love to make this
Richard L.
duuuude
where would you put it?
i saw that a few weeks ago
lol
insane
I need that in my life lol
Richard L.
it would sound like a jet about to take off
Haha, my PC already sounds like that
Richard L.
i would have to mortgage the house to build that :-)
HAHAHAHA
Richard L.
yeah man
gotta run, thanks for everything
good luck on your project
Richard L.
You're welcome, please dont hesitate with any questions that you might have in regards to making your purchase at newegg :-)
thanks :-)
oh, can I add you directly?
Richard L.
add me?
i just meant get you everytime I need assistance
but no worries, lol
Richard L.
you would have to ask whoever you get if im around
im typically on a few hours a week but you can always ask for me
im usually on in the evenings/nights
got it
thanks, bro
Richard L.
anytime :-)
